Strickling, an assistant secretary of commerce, is expected to call for the legislation at a hearing of the Senate Commerce Committee, as reported by the <a title=\"Read the full article on Wall Street Journal\" href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/news\/articles\/SB10001424052748704662604576202971768984598?mod=WSJ_business_whatsNews&amp;mg=reno64-wsj&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fonline.wsj.com%2Farticle%2FSB10001424052748704662604576202971768984598.html%3Fmod%3DWSJ_business_whatsNews\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> Apparently the administration will back a law that follows the outlines of a report issued by the Commerce Department in December.\u00a0 The administration wants any new rules to be enforceable and will look to expand the Federal Trade Commission&#8217;s authority.<\/p>\n<h3>Online Tracking May Be Prohibited<\/h3>\n<p>Among other things, the December report suggested that companies should obtain <strong>permission to use a person&#8217;s personal data<\/strong> for a purpose other than for which it was collected. The administration also eventually could propose that <strong>consumers be given the right to access information<\/strong> about themselves and to have the information stored securely.\u00a0 The administration&#8217;s plan to push for legislation reflects a shifting attitude by the government, which for more than a decade favored a hands-off approach to the Internet.
