Corona Virus Pandemic and Estate / Life Planning

The corona virus pandemic turned life topsy turvey. Many people find themselves scrambling to put affairs in order. For example, preparing a Last Will and Testament. Or writing a Living Will, an advanced directive regarding life support. Maybe your thinking about that. You ask should I write my own Last Will and Testament?  After all forms are available online for low cost!  Some even say “prepared by our attorneys”.

Beware of Pitfalls In a Last Will and Testament

It may seem easy enough. Just need to download a form and fill-in some blanks. Then sign it.  Voila!  You have a Will.  However, beware of the pitfalls in a Last Will and Testament.  This is one legal document that won’t be tested for legal problems until you have passed. Many self-written wills are invalid or have serious legal problems. So your hope of saving your family from legal complications not only fails but   often creates worse problems than if a Will was never written. Also, if you need or want to exclude certain family members from inheritance, your wishes may not be upheld.

The Answer – Have an Attorney Draft Your Will

Avoid the pitfalls and potential problems. Retain an attorney to counsel you, and put your plans, desires and wishes into a properly written, enforceable legal document. A Last Will and Testament, a Living Will, a Trust or any other estate / life planning document needs to work the way you need and want.  Failure is not an option.
